Is all paper safe?
Generally, yes. Cardboard and paper are generally non-toxic. However, I prefer to give my rats paper intended for food. This way, if it's meant for a human to eat off of, it's especially ok for a rat to shred. The list below compiles all sorts of paper/cardboard items my rats love to shred!
A list
- Dixie cups or equivalent (no wax)
- Paper straws (shown in the picture)
- Tissue boxes (plastic film removed)
- Clean package boxes
- Cupcake liners (a rat favorite)
- Paper plates and bowls
- Toilet paper rolls / paper towel rolls (with or without paper still on it)
- Oatmeal cardboard tubes
- Newspaper (most have soy based ink that's non toxic)
- Small pet cardboard tunnels (commercially sold)
- Lollipop sticks (not used)
