Enrichment is important.
Rats get bored. Many rat owners find their rats sitting at the cage door, waiting for playtime. Sometimes we need a break (sleep, work, school) and it's important to have a large cage decorated with interactive rat toys. I have a odd obsession with my rats' cage enrichment, hence this website!
Do rats swallow what they chew?
A frequent concern among rat owners is whether or not rats consume the toys in their cage. Generally, rats will not swallow a toy shred after they've chewed it. They have flaps behind their front teeth that keep chewed objects out. [Scroll down to incisors, and observe the photo exposing the flaps]. The rest of their teeth (molars) are in back of the front teeth. The only reason a rat would pass something through those flaps is if it's food or water. For this reason, please do not flavor your rat toys. This could potentially cause intestinal blockage if they eat the toys because they thought it was food.
Who am I?
My online name is Fumble, and my real life name is Emma. I am a college student who has been owning rats since high school. I have been studying and reading up on rat care for years now. Although I am no expert, I have decided to put my thoughts out there and make this website. As an artist, I am very open to critique! Let me know if something on here is incorrect or just bothers you.
I strictly only rescue or adopt from rescues/shelters. I encourage others to open their homes to a few rescue rats, as well. I am also vegan, so animal rights and rat safety are HUGE to me.
Enjoy the site!
